Agriculture in Arid Areas Conference a Success

The Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center (SQCC) hosted its annual conference November 5, 2015 in Lubbock, Texas, in conjunction with the Office of International Affairs at Texas Tech University (TTU).

This year’s conference, titled “Agriculture in Arid Areas,” was well attended and featured sessions on water and its use in agricultural and urban areas, agricultural production in arid and semi-arid lands, and current technology in arid lands agriculture. SQCC also exhibited an Omani cultural display, with information on Omani handicrafts, travel sites, and history.

Introductory remarks were given by H.E. Ambassador Hunaina Sultan Ahmed Al Mughairy, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the United States and Chair of the SQCC Board of Oversight; Dr. M. Duane Nellis, TTU President; Ambassador Tibor P. Nagy, Jr., Vice Provost for International Affairs.  

Dr. Barron Orr of the University of Arizona and Universidad de Alicante in Spain, gave the plenary address on the challenges of interfacing science and policy for sustainable land management in a changing world. H.E. Ali bin Mohammed Al Abri, Undersecretary for Water Resources at the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources; and H.E. Dr. Ahmed Al Bakri, Undersecretary for Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Wealth, spoke on water resource management in Oman, and strategies for agricultural production in Oman, respectively.

SQCC hosted a banquet the night before to kick off the conference. H.E.  Ambassador Al Mughairy, and Dr. Lawrence Schovanec, TTU Provost and Senior Vice President, welcomed the guests, who included the delegation from Oman, TTU academics, and members of the Lubbock community.

The conference delegation from Oman included a number of water and agricultural specialists. They arrived in Texas ahead of the conference to attend site visits to local and agricultural attractions, and attend round table discussions with TTU professors.
